A significant surge of Arctic air will move into North and Central Texas beginning Friday evening and continuing through the weekend. Rain will transition to freezing rain and sleet Friday night into Saturday, with parts of North Texas seeing a changeover to sleet and snow late Saturday before conditions gradually improve on Sunday.

The most severe impacts are expected in areas where Winter Storm Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings are issued. Timing will be critical—conditions may deteriorate quickly. Monitor alerts closely here:
A powerful and long-lasting winter storm is set to impact large portions of the South, Midwest, and Northeast from Friday through Monday, bringing the risk of damaging ice, heavy snow, dangerous travel, and extended power outages across dozens of states.
Winter Storm Fern, named by The Weather Channel, is forecast to stretch from the Southwest into the Northeast, impacting areas from New Mexico and Texas through the Midwest and into New England. Texas and Georgia are expected to see some of the most disruptive conditions, particularly from ice accumulation. Forecasters estimate that more than 230 million people—nearly two-thirds of the U.S. population—could be affected by snow and/or ice as the system moves eastward.
Fern is expected to strengthen as cold Arctic air clashes with moist Gulf air, creating ideal conditions for freezing rain, sleet, and heavy snow. This temperature contrast increases the likelihood of significant ice buildup across the South, especially in Texas and Georgia, while heavier snowfall develops farther north and east. Prolonged duration raises the risk of infrastructure strain, including downed trees and power lines.
Residents should prepare for hazardous travel, school and business disruptions, and the potential for long-lasting power outages, particularly in ice-prone areas. Now is the time to review emergency plans, secure supplies, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm conditions. Property owners should take preventive steps to reduce risk and document conditions in the event of damage.
